Picasa problem in Linux

0 December 31st, 2009

Once upon a time I had a problem with Picasa and ext3 partitions, what I described on this blog a few posts previously. Recently some problem concerning that issue, appeared. I’m not really sure it is a problem only with Linux version of Picasa, but it didn’t spot it in Windows. What is that about? Doubling folders in photos library.

Why fstab’s permissions are so important

0 August 6th, 2009

Hey, folks! I had one problem some time ago. It was connected with mounting removable media. It didn’t work at all for non-root user. I set up /etc/group and /etc/passwd correctly, but it still didn’t work. I have known the /etc/fstab file, I have known what is this for, so I checked this configuration file out, too. It was correct. I really didn’t know what’s going on. Then I realized I made /etc/fstab file by myself, just like other configuration files. I often make files in other folder and then replace default files by my own files, especially when it is really needed. I had to grapple with fstab, because I had to migrate files from one partition to another, because of used file system.

What to do if your music application stops scrobbling

0 August 5th, 2009

Some time ago I had a problem with scrobbling. It didn’t work at all. There was no such application where scrobbling worked fine but Music On Console with lastfmsubmitd. But listening to music in console is not what I wanted to do. I tried applications written in Python also as in Java. After some time I figured out what’s going on and where’s the problem. There’s my solution.

What to do if Picasa can’t see your ext partition mounted by IFS

4 June 23rd, 2009

Picasa is a very good application. It works better and has more functionality under Windows, but it is also for Linux. When you use Linux, probably you have ext2 or ext3 partition. There is a problem with Picasa under Windows and ext partitions. When you mount ext partition under Windows by IFS then Picasa thinks that your ext partition is a removable drive. You can for example export photos to this partition, but in normal way you can’t index that partition. But I have got solution for this problem.

How to make image editing, running as root and opening terminal easier

0 May 23rd, 2009

There are some interesting packages what make quick-edit of images easier, let you run any script as root and evan open terminal in any place, depend of where are you in Nautilus. That delivered special functions are in the context menu of Nautilus. When you have ones, you can resize or rotate images from context menu and do other interesting things as I have just itemized. There’s no requirement of any running application such as GIMP.

Seesmic

0 May 9th, 2009

I’m using Seesmic now. I saw this site the first time at AntyWeb, which is Polish blog about Web 2.0. I figured out it can be very useful. Every massage in this social network is a video. Even private massage. It is strange a little for me, but I don’t mention it, because it’s pretty good website and with my advice it will be a crap ;)
I’m glad to see you, my Reader, at Seesmic. If you will create an account there, just say me “hallo”. Thanks in advance.

What the nice maps, b!

0 May 6th, 2009

As everyday, also yesterday, I came back from school at afternoon. But what I saw on my desk, was completely other sight than that I am used to see. There were two envelopes on my desk. I caught them to my hands and checked out what was inside. There were the maps I had ordered! Yahoo! What a nice surprise. Actually, it could be like that, but it didn’t, because I had a free-day yesterday. But hell, in fact I got these maps! Mom met postman and he gave her my posts and then she gave them me. And you know, it was, maybe not so huge, but also a surprise :)

Other glance on computers: Hard Disk Drive

2 May 5th, 2009

What are Hard Disk Drives? I think you know, however good to quote. Wikipedia says:

A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. Strictly speaking, “drive” refers to a device distinct from its medium, such as a tape drive and its tape, or a floppy disk drive and its floppy disk. Early HDDs had removable media; however, an HDD today is typically a sealed unit (except for a filtered vent hole to equalize air pressure) with fixed media.

There are a few standards of HDDs. SCSI is used in servers solutions. SATA is going to be most popular. It’s faster and more comfortable than ATA. SATA is the newest of these standards. To connect HDD with your mainbord when you have got SATA drive, you have to use cable slimmer to ATA cable. Using SATA gives you easier control on accurate airflow. I mean ATA cables occupies more capacity.

Today I’ll show you what parts are inside of hard disk drive.
